Linear Guide Rail

A linear guideway (also called a linear guide rail or linear guide) is a rolling-element linear motion system consisting of a precision-ground steel rail and one or more recirculating ball or roller carriages (blocks). Rolling contact between the carriage's recirculating elements and the rail's hardened raceways converts sliding friction to rolling friction, enabling low-resistance, high-speed, and high-precision linear motion with a friction coefficient approximately 1/40 that of conventional sliding guideways. Linear guideways can simultaneously carry radial loads, reverse loads, and moment loads in multiple directions, making them suitable for complex force environments in machining centers, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, industrial robots, automated assembly lines, and medical devices. BOM Bearing supplies linear guideways in standard ball-type (general purpose), low-profile/miniature (space-constrained applications), and roller-type (high rigidity and heavy loads). Multiple precision grades and preload classes available, with optional sealing upgrades and self-lubricating systems. Dimensional series compatible with THK and Hiwin standard models.

Linear Guides - BOM Bearing

Linear Guides

Ball & Roller Recirculating High Precision Grades

BOM Bearing supplies linear guide systems — comprising precision-hardened steel rails and recirculating ball or roller carriages — for high-accuracy linear motion in demanding industrial applications. The rail's ground profile maintains straightness and parallelism; the carriage's recirculating rolling elements provide smooth, low-friction travel with consistent running resistance across the full rail length. Available in HGH (standard square flange) and HGW (wide flange) carriage configurations, with four-row ball recirculation for high load capacity in all directions simultaneously.

  • Rail Sizes: 15 mm to 65 mm rail width; standard lengths and cut-to-length service available
  • Load Directions: Radial, reverse radial, and lateral loads — high capacity in all four principal directions simultaneously
  • Accuracy Grades: Normal (N), High (H), Precision (P), Super Precision (SP), Ultra Precision (UP) — rail straightness and carriage running accuracy
  • Preload Classes: Light (C1), Medium (C2), Heavy (C3); zero preload (C0) available for low-friction applications
  • Carriage Styles: HGH (standard height, 4-bolt flange); HGW (wide base, 6-bolt flange); flanged or low-profile options
  • Sealing: Standard end seals; optional needle wiper seals for swarf-heavy or contaminated environments

Custom & Integrated Linear Guide Solutions

Integrated Assemblies Engineering Support

Beyond standard catalog linear guides, BOM Bearing engineers linear guide assemblies integrated with drive components, end blocks, and structural members as a single unit — reducing assembly steps and achieving superior positional accuracy.

  • Integrated Assemblies: Linear guide rail combined with drive screw mounting blocks, end housings, or base plate as one machined unit — more compact structure, smaller envelope, higher system rigidity
  • Precision Advantage: One-piece machining eliminates assembly stack-up errors between guide rail, end blocks, and drive references, delivering higher combined accuracy than separately assembled components
  • Rail Length Customization: Cut-to-length rails, hole pattern customization, and rail splicing for long-travel applications
  • Accuracy & Preload Matching: Precision grade and preload class selected and verified for specific application requirements; matched rail-carriage pairs available
  • Special Environment Options: Stainless steel rails and carriages for corrosive or cleanroom environments; heavy-duty wipers for contaminated conditions

Frequently Asked Questions

?

What is the difference between HGH and HGW linear guide carriages?

Both series use four-row ball recirculation and are compatible with the same rail profiles. The HGH carriage has a standard height and four mounting holes — compact and widely used in machine tools and robots. The HGW carriage has a wider base and six mounting holes — providing a larger mounting footprint and higher moment load resistance, preferred for applications with significant overturning loads or where a rigid, wide mounting interface is needed.

?

What do the preload classes C0, C1, C2, C3 mean?

Preload class defines the internal preload between the balls and raceways. C0 (zero preload) provides the lowest friction and is used for high-speed, low-load applications. C1 (light preload) eliminates backlash with minimal friction increase. C2 (medium preload) provides higher rigidity and is suitable for most machine tool applications. C3 (heavy preload) gives maximum rigidity for applications with significant vibration or large external moments, at the cost of higher friction and heat generation.

?

How is travel life calculated for a linear guide?

Travel life (L, in km) is calculated using the rated dynamic load Cr and the applied load F: L = (Cr/F)³ × 50 km. This is analogous to the L10 life calculation for rotary bearings. Life is significantly extended by correct preload selection, proper lubrication, and keeping applied loads within the rated capacity.

?

What is an integrated linear guide assembly?

An integrated assembly combines the linear guide rail with end blocks, drive screw supports, or base plate as a single machined component. This eliminates the clearances and alignment errors introduced by assembling separate parts, producing a more compact system with higher positional accuracy and better overall rigidity than a conventional bolt-together assembly.

?

Can BOM supply cut-to-length rails and custom hole patterns?

Yes. BOM Bearing can supply linear guide rails cut to specified lengths, with custom mounting hole patterns, recessed holes, and rail splicing features for long-travel applications. Contact our engineering team with your rail length, travel distance, and hole pattern requirements.
