Track Roller
A track roller (also known as a cam follower) is a thick-walled bearing unit designed for rolling contact along guide surfaces, cams, or tracks, capable of sustaining high radial loads, impact loads, and off-center loading that would rapidly damage standard rolling bearings. The thick outer ring distributes contact stress over a larger area, maintaining structural rigidity under demanding conditions. Internal rolling elements — needle rollers or cylindrical rollers — provide high radial load capacity within a compact cross-section. Track rollers are available in yoke type (bore through the outer ring for shaft-mounted installation) and stud type (with an integral eccentric or straight stud for direct bolt-on mounting). BOM Bearing manufactures track rollers using precision bearing-grade grinding processes for superior raceway finish and dimensional accuracy compared to typical commercial cam followers. Standard and fully custom configurations available for cam mechanisms, conveyor systems, automation guide rails, packaging machinery, and industrial material handling.

Track Rollers
Track rollers (yoke-type) are complete, ready-to-install units in which the thick-walled outer ring serves directly as the rolling contact surface on a cam, track, or guide rail. BOM Bearing supplies NATR series (caged needle rollers — optimized for higher speeds) and NUTR series (full complement needle rollers — for maximum radial load capacity). Both series mount through a smooth bore for bolt or pin installation in a yoke fork, with the needle roller bearing contained between the bore and the hardened outer ring.
- Outer Ring: Hardened and precision-ground; serves as rolling contact surface directly on cam profiles, linear tracks, and guide rails
- Series Options: NATR (caged needle rollers — higher speed); NUTR (full complement — maximum radial load capacity)
- Bore Range: 5 mm to 50 mm bore diameter
- Load Direction: Radial loads primarily; flanged outer ring accommodates limited axial guidance
- Lubrication: Grease-lubricated and sealed; relubrication via grease nipple on larger sizes
- Mounting: Smooth bore for pin mounting in yoke applications; used in pairs or series along a track

Custom & Integrated Track Roller Solutions
Beyond standard NATR/NUTR catalog sizes, BOM Bearing engineers track roller assemblies integrated with yoke forks, shafts, and mounting hardware as a single manufactured unit — eliminating assembly tolerances and producing a more compact, higher-performing follower system.
- Integrated Assemblies: Track roller combined with yoke fork, shaft, or mounting bracket as one machined unit — more compact structure, smaller envelope, higher load capacity
- Precision Advantage: One-piece machining eliminates assembly stack-up errors between roller bore, pin, and yoke, delivering higher combined accuracy than separately assembled components
- Outer Ring Profile: Custom outer ring profile — cylindrical, convex crowned, or flanged — matched to specific track geometry
- Bore & Dimension Customization: Non-standard bore, OD, width, and special bore tolerances for interference-fit pin applications
- Material & Surface Options: Bearing steel standard; stainless steel outer ring for corrosive environments; special coatings available

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between NATR and NUTR series track rollers?
NATR series use caged needle rollers — the cage spaces the needles evenly, reducing friction and allowing higher operating speeds. NUTR series use full complement needle rollers — without a cage, more needles fit in the same space, increasing the load-carrying cross-section and static load capacity. For applications where maximum load capacity is the priority and speed is moderate, NUTR is preferred. For higher-speed applications or where smooth, consistent friction is important, NATR is the better choice.
Can track rollers carry axial loads?
Standard NATR and NUTR track rollers are designed primarily for radial loads. The flanged outer ring provides limited axial guidance — sufficient to prevent the roller from drifting laterally along a track — but not for significant sustained axial forces. For combined radial and axial load applications, a different bearing type such as a combined needle/thrust assembly or yoke-type roller bearing with thrust capability should be specified.
How are track rollers lubricated?
Track rollers are supplied greased and sealed at the factory. Smaller sizes are sealed for life maintenance-free. Larger sizes incorporate a grease nipple on the end face for periodic relubrication during maintenance intervals. The seal retains grease around the needle rollers and excludes contamination from the running environment.
What is an integrated track roller assembly?
An integrated assembly combines the track roller with its yoke fork, mounting shaft, or bracket as a single machined component. This eliminates pin-to-bore clearances and stack-up errors, producing a more compact follower unit with higher precision and higher load capacity than a conventionally assembled pin-and-roller arrangement.
Can BOM supply track rollers with custom outer ring profiles?
Yes. BOM Bearing can engineer track rollers with cylindrical, convex crowned, or specifically contoured outer ring profiles to match custom cam or track geometries. Special bore dimensions, stainless steel materials, and special coatings are also available. Contact our engineering team with your application requirements.
